Alligator group paid visit to ACLE

25/09/2009

Following the announcement that some alligator breeders in Florida have decided to start producing their own finished leathergoods rather than selling the skins (leatherbiz.com, August 13, 2009), a delegation of producers from the state visited the All China Leather Exhibition in Shanghai at the start of this month.

Breeders make most of their money from alligator meat, but have earned good money in recent years from the skins, with prices reaching $57 per square-foot in 2007. However, the is now down to between $12 and $15 dollars, which has made companies in Florida think about adding more value before selling the skins.

The state of Florida has shown a keen interest in the development; the state department of agriculture led the trade mission team of alligator leather producers to Shanghai for the exhibition.
