Smit & Zoon tackles formaldehyde questions

Specialist chemicals provider Smit & Zoon gave a presentation to leather industry professionals in Thailand on September 9 on the subject of formaldehyde.
The company said that formaldehyde-related requirements are becoming a bigger challenge for the leather industry every year, so it felt sure there would be a high level of interest in the Bangkok presentation.
A group of over 45 technicians, tannery owners and chemists joined Smit & Zoon on the day to discuss the background of the use of formaldehyde in the tanning industry, the difference between ‘free’ and ‘releasable’ formaldehyde, related test methods and several other formaldehyde-related topics.
The company said afterwards: "Although many tanneries are confronted with stricter requirements from their customers, formaldehyde-related matters are easily misunderstood or misinterpreted. The basic goal was to give Thai tanners a better understanding of this complex topic, helping them to keep their leather quality at a high level."
Smit & Zoon launched its SAFETAN range of retanning products during the Bangkok event, explaining that the range consists of a group of "innovative, high-quality and safe retanning specialities". It said the products exceed the latest standards concerning free monomers (such as formaldehyde or phenol) and all restricted substance chemicals (as mentioned in the restricted substance lists or RSLs that many user-brands have drawn up).
