The International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies (IULTCS) has given its backing to the Tannery of the Year Awards, launched by World Leather this year.

The organisation's executive committee has agreed unanimously that the IULTCS should participate as a formal supporter of the scheme.

The IULTCS said in a statement: "The objective of these awards is to generate a positive image for the leather industry by recognising and publicising good practice. Criteria include, among other laudable goals, a demonstrable commitment to technological innovation and environmental best practice. These criteria are well aligned with the aims and objectives of the IULTCS. As an organisation, we strive in principle to support all attemtps that seek to improve the identity of leather as a unique and valuable structural material and, of course, the image of the industry that produces it."

IULTCS president, Elton Hurlow, added that the organisation was especially pleased to learn that the inspiration for Tannery of the Year was the International Leather Forum in Paris in 2007. "The International Leather Forum was an IULTCS initiative which brought together the leather supply chain to discuss challenges and opportunities for our industry," he said.

He expained that the IULTCS has, in recent years, expanded the scope of its mission to include research, training and communication objectives with the goal of further supporting and promoting the industry. "We are therefore glad to support the Tannery of the Year Awards," he said, "and trust that tanneries who achieve excellence will make themselves available as an example for others in our industry to benchmark and emulate."
