Trade unions stop short of calling for ‘heels’ ban

Trade unions in the United Kingdom have approved a motion at their annual conference in mid-September to demand that women have the right to wear comfortable shoes in the workplace.

The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists introduced the debate and said that “proper risk assessments” over high heels were needed.

One of the podiatrists involved in the motion, Lorraine Jones, later denied that the idea was to ban stiletto heels in the office. She told Reuters that it was more a question of women “in certain industries” needing their bosses to acknowledge their need and their right to wear comfortable shoes.

The society said in a statement: “This is a serious issue for women in the workplace, and we at the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists want to ensure women workers are never forced to wear high heels, which we believe can lead to foot health problems in the short, medium and long term.”

The debate made headline news in many countries.
