Progress on Bangladesh tannery relocation plan

The Bangladesh Small & Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) has announced that it plans to put out to tender next month the project of setting up a central effluent treatment plant in the Savar
industrial complex.

The government said a number of years ago that it wanted to relocate tanneries in and around the capital city, Dhaka, to the new facility. Tanners have held back from moving because of disputes over the funding of the new effluent treatment plant. The number of tanneries involved is estimated to be 195.

Bangladesh’s industries minister, Dilip Barua, met leaders of the Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA) and of the Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather Goods and Footwear Exporters Association recently to discuss his plans to move the Savar project forward.

He told local media that the government was sincere about shifting the tanneries to Savar.

“Long-term loans on easy conditions can be provided to entrepreneurs to relocate the industry,” he said.
