Midnight inspection catches tannery off guard

16/09/2009

The authorities in the city of Wenzhou in eastern China have claimed that a tactic of carrying out environmental inspections of industrial facilities, including tanneries, at night is working.

A tannery processing pig skins, Wenzhou Hongyan Tannery, was closed on September 11 after inspectors carried out an assessment of the operation at midnight and said they had witnessed untreated effluent into the municipal sewerage system.

After this, the authorities said they intended to step up inspections, especially at night.
