The tanning sector in Sialkot, one of Pakistan's most important centres of production of leather-based sports goods, has recorded an important improvement in its environmental management, according to a senior figure in the country's leather industry.

A former chairman of the Pakistan Gloves Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PGMEA), Mohammad Anwar Butt, has told local media that cleaner production techniques have brought about a 10% reduction in tanners' use of chemicals, and a 25% reduction in their use of water. At the same time, he said, the tanning sector in the city has reduced by 20% the amount of waste it generates, while reducing treatment costs by between 20% and 30%.
