08/09/2009
Following the release of figures for August export volumes on September 3, The Brazilian Tanners Council (CICB) has issued details of the value of exports of hides and leather so far this year.
The figure for the first eight months of 2009 is $679 million. This represents a drop of 50.6% compared to the same period last year.
For the whole of 2008, Brazil’s tanning industry achieved exports worth $1.8 billion contributing 7% of all of the country’s exports. Taking into account tanneries, footwear manufacturers and suppliers of chemicals and machinery, the sector includes around 10,000 companies across Brazil, generates $21 billion a year in the Brazilian economy, and is responsible for 500,000 jobs, CICB said.
