Tehran talks up trade with Turkey

07/09/2009

The Organisation for Investment, Economic and Technical Assistance of Iran (OIETAI) has said it will organise a conference aimed at encouraging Iranian entrepreneurs to take advantage of investment opportunities in Turkey.

The organisation’s president, Behrouz Alishiri, said he thought as many as 130 business leaders would take part in the event, including representatives of the leather, leathergoods and footwear manufacturing sectors.

He said that, after China, Turkey is the second most important destination for Iranian investments opportunities at the moment. Over the past few years, co-operation between Turkey and Iran has increased. Since a breakthrough meetings between Turkish president, Ahmet Necdet Nezer, and his Iranian counterpart, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in 2002, the value of trade between the two countries has increased by more than 600%, reaching $7.5 billion in 2007.

In March 2009, the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding to work together to improve air, land, and sea transportation links as part of an effort to raise the value of bilateral trade to $20 billion.
