Exports of hides, skins and beef fall
04/09/2009
Brazil’s ministry for industrial development and external commerce has reported a trade surplus of $3 billion for the month of August, making it one of the best performing months this year, but exports of key products, including hides, skins and beef, were down considerably on the same month in 2008.
So far this year, the only months that have produced a greater trade surplus for Brazil are April and July, an indication that imports are falling faster than exports, although both are down on 2008. The external trade secretary, Welber Barral, said the result in August was good. Exports for this August across all sectors were worth $13.8 billion, 29.9% down on the figure for August 2008.
Hides and skins exports fell by 41.5%. The decline in beef exports was 38.4%.
A piece of positive news was that exports across all sectors to the US increased by 27.7% in August 2009 compared to July 2009.
