Leather industry ski race idea resurrected
04/09/2009
An idea to hold a ski race for people in the tanning industry, which first came to light during the annual conference at the Lederinstitut Gerberschule Reutlingen in 2007, came up again during networking discussions at the All China Leather Exhibition 2009 in Shanghai at the start of September.
Thomas Schauwecker, leather technician at specialist chemical supplier BK Giulini, was part of the early discussions, if not the originator of the idea. He said at ACLE that the proposed race had been a hot topic of conversation in Shanghai and that he wanted to try to convince people from all parts of the industry and all parts of the world to take part.
“We think a facility run by the family of Olympic ski champion Benjamin Raich at the Pitztal Glacier in Austria would be the ideal place,” he said. “People can come from all over. They can rent all the equipment they need from there, have some training first, and then take part in the race. Then, after the race, we could have a social event that would offer an excellent networking opportunity for everyone in the leather industry.”
He said May 2010 would be the ideal time to hold the leather industry ski race and asked interested parties to send an email to leatherbiz (wl@worldtrades.co.uk) to express their interest.
