WRAP backs Tannery of the Year
03/09/2009
Independent not-for-profit organisation Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (WRAP) has become the latest backer of the Tannery of the Year programme.
Chief executive of the Washington DC-based organisation, Steven Jesseph, said that the programme was of interest to WRAP because it seeks to highlight good examples of corporate social responsibility in the global leather industry. He explained: “From what I know of the leather industry, some businesses are on the leading edge on social and environment issues; others have much work to do. As we saw well over a decade ago, various activist groups try to paint an industry with one broad brush, and it is often in black. The work of highlighting the best of the best is roundly needed and should be widely covered by all possible media. Clearly, companies can thrive economically while doing the right thing.”
The programme's aim is to identify the two best tanneries in five regions around the world: China, the rest of Asia, the Americas, Africa, and Europe. We will publish in World Leather in-depth reports into what makes these tanneries shining examples of good practice in all aspects of corporate social responsibility: environmental concerns, good relationships with employees, partners, suppliers and the local community, commitment to innovation and financial probity.
So far, we have named and published reports on the finalists for Europe and Africa. The names for China will be announced in the coming days.
