Court awards first compensation package over sofas

A man from Willenhall, near Birmingham, has become the first UK consumer to receive a compensation package after suffering a skin reaction to a leather sofa that had been transported with dimethyl fumarate (DMF) in the packaging to prevent mould.
Media in the UK reported on September 1 that the man, Maurice Heminsley, had received a four-figure payout, plus a refund, from a furniture chain. Legal commentators speculated that this will lead to large numbers of further compensation claims against a list of retailers.
