ACLE opens in Shanghai

02/09/2009

The eleventh All China Leather Exhibition got under way in Shanghai on September 2.

Co-located with the China International Footwear Fair and Moda Shanghai, the 2009 event attracted 1,050 exhibitors from a total of 36 countries; 19 countries grouped exhibitors together in national pavillions. The total exhibition area was 57,500 square-metres.

At the official opening ceremony, Madam Zhang Shuhua, chairman of joint-organiser the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA), said the whole global economy had suffered in the past year because of a "financial tsunami". But she said China now was expecting revitalisation.

In spite of negative results for the leather industry in China for the first six months of this year (see separate story), she pointed out that China's gross domestic product for the same period had increased by 7.2%. She said Chinese the order-books of Chinese manufacturers, including those in the leather sector, had begun to increase again in May and that this positive momentum had continued.

Perrine Ardouin, senior event manager for APLF Limited, CLIA's organising partner for the event, agreed that the mood at APLF this year was positive. She said: "A year ago, there was gloom everywhere because of the state of the global economy, with predictions of worse to come, but it really feels that, here at APLF, we are back to business as usual."
