US beef exports continue to fall

According to reports, the economic downturn has had a severe impact on US beef exports. Estimates suggest US beef exports will fall 9% in 2009 compared with 2008 exports to 1.7 billion pounds.

Second-quarter exports totalled 471 million pounds, down just slightly compared with 472 million pounds during the same quarter last year. Exports to Mexico, the largest export destination for US beef, fell 14% during the second quarter, while exports to Canada fell 7%. Exports to Japan rose 8%.

Exports are US beef exports are expected to experience further declines in July, with further declines in exports to Canada.
