Leathergoods to play important role for Ethiopia

Ethiopia’s trade and industry ministry hopes next year will be a better one for the country following a difficult year as a result of global economic conditions.

The ministry has reported that commodity exports for the 2008-2009 totalled $1.4 billion, down $30 million year-on-year.

The country’s main commodity exports currently include livestock, meat, oil seeds and gold. However, the government hopes exporters will be able to produce higher value products such as leathergoods and textiles next year in order to increase export earnings.
