Indian leather research team claims 90% reduction in pollution

Researchers at the Chennai-based Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) are claiming to have developed a novel green technology for leather processing. The new technique makes use of biocatalysts to reduce the amount of potential pollutants discharged into the environment during the tanning process.
The new process makes use of enzymes to reduce the discharge of hazardous substances during the tanning and pre-tanning steps of leather processing. Dr Palanisamy Thanikaivelan, a senior CLRI scientist, has said that this can reduce pollution by 90%.
The CLRI idea is to use enzymes such as carbohydrases, proteases and proteolytic to replace the conventional steps of soaking, de-hairing, bating and degreasing.
