Brazilian leather firms still anxious

A new survey carried out by the by the Brazilian National Confederation of Industry (CNI) showed that, although slight economic improvements were seen in July, Brazilian leather firms are still concerned about the future.

The ICEI index rose from 49.4 points in April to 58.2 points in July, just slightly beating the same level recorded July 2008 (58.1 points).

The survey, which measures confidence levels of businesses from a wide range of industries recorded the first positive results since the year began. It showed that many are beginning to feel more confident about the economy and about business development.

The report indicated that industrial activity supports this reverse in sentiment and that companies are more likely to make new investments and increase production levels in the near future.

Despite these indications, two of the 27 industrial sectors involved in the research showed less confidence in the economy. These include firms in the leather, wood, pulp and paper segments.
