APTMA closures to mark tannery deaths

Tariq Mehmood, chairman of the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) has announced that all of its members’ mills will close on August 13 to mark the death of tannery owner Mian Najeeb Zafar (see leatherbiz 06.08.09).

Mr Mehmood said that all of its members’ industrial units would close to protest against the “brutal” killing of Mr Zafar for what he describes as fabricated blasphemy charges.

Other associations including several leather associations are said to have supported the move.

Another man who worked at the Eastern Leather Factory was killed and a number of others were injured when a riot broke out at the unit last week.
