Bangladeshi leather exporters rethink strategy

10/08/2009

Because Bangladesh’s finished leather exports have fallen substantially since the start of the global economic slump, many manufacturers in the country have been forced to change the way they do business. Many are opting to add value to their export offering by producing leathergoods.

According to the Export Promotion Bureau, leather bag and purse exports have risen by more than 90% to $16.9 million in the last year, while leather shoe exports have grown more than 10% to $186.9 million. The country exports around six million pairs of leather shoes each year.

The bureau claims as many as 40%, or 48, of the country’s 120 finished leather exporters has adopted this strategy.
