X-Rite’s VS450 can test suede

X-Rite has introduced a new machine to control the colour quality of various materials, including suede.

The VS450 spectrophotometer is said to be an advanced and affordable technology that controls colour by measuring a wide range of wet and dry samples. It can measure samples at a distance without contact, allowing technicians to easily measure substrates, such as suede, that prove difficult for instruments that use contact technology.

Kenneth Phillips, product manager in X-Rite’s industrial colour and appearance division, where the spectrophotometer was developed, explains that it can measure test surfaces of materials such as powders, liquids, pastes and suede leather in their natural, unaltered states to yield "truer" results. Unlike many hand-held or benchtop spectrophotometers currently used in laboratories that physically touch the sample with the viewing port, the VS450 measures samples accurately from a distance of around 38mm.

Its Line of Sight visibility is said to enable technicians to position the sample quickly and easily, while its Active Visual Targeting projects a prominent, illuminated target ring onto the sample to allow precise and accurate measurements.
The VS450 has two aperture sizes (6mm and 12mm) that can be switched with the click of a button, eliminating the need to recalibrate the instrument and has an integrated gloss sensor for gloss measurements on wet and dry samples.
