Downturn in leather exports for Pakistan

Pakistan’s total leather sector exports fell by 21.8% during the financial year just ended, July 2008 to June 2009, reaching $968 million compared to the previous financial year’s total of $1.2 billion.
In 2008-2009, the country exported just over 19 million square-metres of tanned leather, with a value of $293 million, compared to
24.2 million square-metres, worth$ 415.2 million in 2007-2008. These figures represent a decline of 21.6% in volume and 29.4% in value. The
country exported leathergoods worth $544.9 million, (including leather garments with a value of $390.9million and gloves worth $143.1). This compares with $699.5 million in the previous financial year, a drop of 22.1%.
Over the period, Pakistan exported 14.4 million pairs of footwear worth $130.4 million. Leather footwear’s share of this total was $105.8 million.
