Romania’s leather output declines

24/07/2009

The latest figures from the Romanian National Institute of Statistics show that production of leather and leathergoods in the country fell sharply in the first quarter of 2009.

Industrial output from Romanian manufacturing companies across the board was down by 13% for the quarter, compared to the same period in 2008, but the decline in leather production, including leather, footwear, handbags and other leathergoods was much steeper at 23.7%.

The authorities in Romania have said that the decline began during the last quarter of 2008 and that little respite can be expected for the second quarter of this year.
