ALCA holds successful annual meeting
24/07/2009
The American Leather Chemists Association (ALCA) held its 105th annual meeting at the Oglebay Resort and Conference Center in Wheeling, West Virginia, at the end of June.
In addition to the presentation of technical papers and a series of awards, the event also consisted of a range of sports and social activities, including the yearly two-mile fun-run, sponsored by World Leather magazine.
This year, the John Arthur Wilson memorial lecture was presented by Eleanor M. Brown, research chemist and lead scientist at the eastern regional research centre of the US Department of Agriculture.
The recipient of the Fred O'Flaherty Service Award, which recognises the contribution over time to ALCA of a long-standing member, was David Rabinovitch of David Rabinovitch Consulting, while Professor Karel Karel Kolomazník from the Tomas Bata University in the Czech Republic received the Alsop Award for his numerous technical papers and ongoing contributions to the industry.
Incoming officers were introduced by outgoing president, Steve Yanek of Seton Leather. They are David LeBlanc of TFL USA and Canada, and Craig Keyser of Craig Keyser Consutants. It was announced that next year's event will take place from June 9-13 at the Lake Geneva Grand Geneva Resort in Wisconsin.
In addition to publishing the highly respected Journal of the American Leather Chemists Association (JALCA), edited by Robert White, the association will continue to offer its online correspondence course. Technical books are also available from the association.
