Beef consumption up in Uruguay

23/07/2009

The National Meat Institute of Uruguay (INAC) has reported an increase of 6.5% in the amount of beef consumers in the South American country bought in the first five months of the year, compared to the same period in 2008.

Beef consumption in Uruguay from January to May was 69,000 tonnes, compared to 65,000 over the same period last year. The industry body said this was the highest level of consumption since 2003.

INAC president, Luis Alfredo Fratti, explained on releasing the figures that fair and stable prices had helped make beef more popular among shoppers.
