Turkey takes control of its sheep and goat herds
23/07/2009
Turkey's ministry of agriculture has announced new regulations for the movement of animal herds with the aim of imposing better control on animal disease.
Under the new set-up, which will take effect on January 1, 2010, the state veterinary authorities will take responsibility for health, statistics and development of sheep and goat breeds. This responsibility will range from small herds of sheep and goats in villages across Turkey to the operations in larger breeding farms and ranches.
The government has insisted that livestock farmers must register all details of sheep and goat herd sizes before the end of this year. Any farmer who fails to supply this information will lose access to state support.
