Centenary celebrations culminate in July weekend
16/07/2009
The University of Northampton’s celebrations to commemorate 100 years of leather education in the UK will continue with three days of activities in Northampton and London from July 17-19.
The original educational facility for the leather industry in the UK was established in Bermondsey in London in 1909. Since then, it has merged, relocated and changed its name several times to become the British School of Leather Technology (BSLT), which is now part of the University of Northampton.
Visitors from the leather and fashion industries across the world, including many BSLT alumni, will be arriving in Northampton on July 17 to take part in the Beast to Beauty conference at the city's Guildhall, hosted by World Leather and training consultancy Leather Wise.
The following day, guests at the Centenary of Leather weekend will receive a tour of the BSLT tannery at the university's Park Campus. Guests will also visit the Leather Conservation Centre, based nearby in Moulton Park. They will then take part in a series of cultural visits around Northamptonshire including Althorp and the Shoe Museum.
The evening culminates with a prestigious Centenary of Leather banquet, awards ceremony and fashion show at Park Campus.
As many guests will have memories of the college in Bermondsey, the centenary celebrations will also include a visit to London on Sunday, July 19. The delegates will have breakfast with designer Zandra Rhodes, followed by a cultural visit to Bermondsey and a reception at The Leathersellers’ Company.
