China's retail sales in the first half year rose by 15% compared to the same period in 2008, reaching $859.6 billion, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said on July 16. Retail sales in June also rose by 15% from May, said the NBS spokesman Li Xiaochao.

Urban sales of consumer goods grew by 14.4%, but the growth rate in rural areas was even higher at 16.4%.

"There were two highlights in promoting domestic demand: property sales rose by 31.7% in the first half year from the same period last year; automobile sales expanded by 17.7% year on year," Mr Li said.
