Bolivia claims record exports
13/07/2009
Exports from Bolivia between January 2006 and May 2008 increased by 57% compared to the period between 2002 and 2005, the government has said.
It said that the figures represented a record.
According to official statistics, annual export earnings at the start of the decade were aroung $1.2 billion a year. The figure for 2008 was almost $6.9 billion.
The figures for the first five months of 2009 show the effects of the global economic downturn, with exports down by $809 million compared to the same period last year. Preferential export rates to the US under a programme to counter the narcotics industry have ended, but producers of leathergoods are among those that can claim assistance under a central fund set up by the Bolivian government to help exporters sell their goods in the US market.
