JBS expands in Mato Grosso
07/07/2009
Packer and tanning group JBS-Friboi has announced that it is expanding its operations in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso by taking over the lease on five production units that are idle.
The five plants were previously operated by a rival firm, Quatro Marcos, which is going through financial restructuring.
With this development, JBS hopes to generate 3,000 new jobs and to increase its slaughter capacity in Brazil to more than 26,000 per day.
Reports suggest that the arrangement will last for five years, after which JBS will be able to renew or buy the Mato Grosso plants.
However, local livestock farmers have suggested that they may be reluctant to supply the new JBS abattoirs because they are still owed money by Quatro Marcos.
