Argentina to ask for an increase
06/07/2009
The Argentinian Association of Beef Exporters (APEA) has asked the government in Buenos Aires to open negotiations with the European Commission over the amount of high-quality beef the South American country is entitled to export to the European Union (EU) at the preferential rates available under the so-called Hilton Quota.
Introduced in 1997, the Hilton Quota also applies to beef imports from Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Argentina’s quota at the moment is 28,000 tonnes of beef a year, but other exporting countries have recently been able to push their permitted limit under the Hilton Quota upwards owing to the recent expansion in the number of EU countries.
