Tannery sludge is not to blame

02/07/2009

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services and the Department of Natural Resources have said that test results on sludge from the tanning industry distributed on farms in four counties in northwestern Missouri, suggest it is not a health hazard, and that there is no link to an increased number of tumour cases in the local area.

"Yes, that is what we are saying,” said Scott Clardy, section chief for the health department.

Sludge from the Prime Tanning wet blue tannery in St Joseph, Missouri, (known as National Beef Leathers since an affiliate of National Beef Packing Company acquired it in March) did contain chrome 6, but the authorities made it clear that this chemical is not known to present such serious health risks.
