Greenpeace report sparks debate in parliament
01/07/2009
The main protagonists in the recent dispute involving Greenpeace, the Amazon rainforest and the Brazilian meat industry have been invited to take part in a special debate on the subject at the Brazilian parliament.
The debate is the idea of the parliamentary committee for the environment and sustainable development; it will take place in Brasilia at an unconfirmed date.
Member of parliament and committee chairman, Roberto Rocha, said it was important for the Brazilian authorities to study in detail the content of the Greenpeace report that sparked the controversy, 'Slaughtering the Amazon'. The non-governmental organisation claimed in the document that the meat and leather sectors in Brazil were responsible for a large proportion of illegal deforestation in the Amazon regions of Brazil. Packer firms and meat and leather industry representatives have dismissed the claims.
All have been invited to take part in the parliamentary discussion.
