Fewer exhibitors at Pakistan fair

29/06/2009

Officials from PFMA told leatherbiz that, in spite of the global recession and setbacks within the sector, 50 to 60 buyers from the UK, Germany, Canada, Sri Lanka, Iran, Italy, South Africa, the UAE and Greece attended the 11th Pakistan International Footwear Show PIFS-2009 (formerly Juft). However, the number of stalls at the fair fell to 84 from 100 last year.

Syed Mohibullah Shah, chief executive of Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP), inaugurated the show on June 27 at the Hotel Pearl Continental in Lahore. The show, which ran until June 29, was organised by the Pakistan Footwear Manufacturers Association (PFMA).

According to PFMA, the shoe industry in Pakistan has the added advantage of cheap labour as well as an aptitude for creativity. Reports indicate that shoe exports from the country have risen by around 250% over the last few years.
