European Holstein congress in Istanbul

26/06/2009

The 28th meeting of the European Holstein Race Confederation (EHRC) congress will be held in Istanbul on June 29 to July 1.

Holstein cattle are well known as a source of milk production and their raw hides are widely used for shoe upper, upholstery and automobile leather. They are particularly popular in Holland, Denmark and Germany.

Estimates suggest the number of live Holstein cattle across Europe total around 10 million head. This excludes cross-bred herds and cattle exports beyond Europe. Around 1.5 million Holstein hides are thought to be submitted for leather production each year.

President of the EHRC, Sedat Gungor said: "The international approach for breeding, milk production and race development will be discussed with breeders, vets and relevant parties. Panels will also look into genetic improvement, animal health and disease prevention."

The EHRC counts 29 countries among its members, all of which are invited to the congress.
