Dramatic rise in cowhide imports

According to the Fujian inspection and quarantine bureau, the Chinese province’s cowhide imports have risen dramatically since the beginning of 2009.
It claims cowhide imports rose 110% in weight to 32,600 tonnes during the first five months of the year. Imports rose 26.7% to $44.2 million during this period.
The bureau has attributed the rise to increased demand from the leather shoe, bag, luggage and leathergoods sectors.
