Cows account for 71% of cattle slaughter
Following a leatherbiz report on June 10 which showed cattle numbers are falling sharply in Argentina, new figures reveal that females account for the vast majority of cattle slaughterings.
According to reports, the country’s herd has declined dramatically. Figures for last week show that of the 30,215 cattle slaughtered, females accounted for 71%, equivalent to 21,477 head. Among the females, 43.2% were cows—which includes pregnant cows—while 28.5% were heifers and calves. By contrast, the number of steers slaughtered was the lowest seen in recent months; just 1,176 head were slaughtered, accounting for 3.9% of the total.
