Rapid increase in Quanzhou City hide imports

According to the Quanzhou Bureau of Inspection and Quarantine, cow hide imports rapidly increased in both weight and value in the first quarter of 2009.

Imports of hides rose 712% in weight to 4,600 tonnes and 406% in value to $7 million during the quarter compared with the first quarter of 2008.  

The bureau claims the bulk of these imports are salted hides and wet blue, and that the US, Canada, Ireland, Panama and Italy are its main sources.

This sharp year-on-year increase, according to the bureau, can be attributed to higher domestic demand for shoes.
