According to China’s ministry of industry and information technology, the leather sector felt the strain of the credit crunch during the first four months of the year.

Its figures show that finished leather production fell 11.3% to 171 million square-metres during the four-month period, while the production of leather shoes and boots fell 9.2% to 3.2 billion pairs. Leather clothing production fell 10.4% to 10.7 million pieces and leather bag production fell 10.3% to 210 million articles.

Meanwhile, a recent meeting held by Wenzhou’s Ouhai Leather Association revealed that total industrial output value for the Ouhai leather sector was down 13% compared with 2007 figures.
