Tannery of the Year: European shortlist announced

27/05/2009

World Leather magazine and its partners, APLF and Buckman Laboratories, have shortlisted two of the tanneries nominated for the Tannery of the Year Awards in the European category.

The two tanneries, who will go forward to the inaugural Tannery of the Year Awards even, which will take place at APLF in spring 2010, are
Bridge of Weir Leather Company Limited, Renfrewshire, Scotland, and Josef Heinen GmbH & Co KG, Wegberg, Germany.

Both tanneries feature in extensive reports in the June-July issue of World Leather, with details of how they are responding to the challenges facing the tanning sector today.

After Europe, the attention of the Tannery of the Year Awards will move to Africa.

With the focus on corporate social responsibility, the programme's aim is to identify the two best tanneries in six regions around the world: China, the rest of Asia, South America, Central and North America, Africa, and Europe. We will publish in World Leather in-depth reports into what makes these tanneries shining examples of good practice in all aspects of corporate social responsibility: environmental concerns, good relationships with employees, partners, suppliers and the local community, commitment to innovation and financial probity.

The driving force for this initiative came from the International Leather Forum in Paris in 2007, which urged the industry to do more to present leather in a positive light. Tannery of the Year is World Leather’s contribution to this.
