Drop in exports in Pakistan

Pakistan’s leather sector exports fell by 3.5% during the month of April 2009 to $60.1 million from $62.3 million in March 2009 and by 38.8% compared to April 2008 ($98.3 million), according to data released by the Federal Bureau of Statistics.

The country exported finished leather worth $21.6 million, leathergoods worth $26.5 million and footwear worth $12 million, compared to $20.2 million, $29 million and $13.1 million respectively in the previous month.

Pakistan’s total leather sector exports during the first ten months of the current financial year (July 2008 to April 2009) were down by 19.7% to $816.1 million, from just over $1 billion in same period last year.

During the ten-month period, the country exported 15.8 million square-metres of finished leather with a value of $248 million, compared to
19.7 million square-metres, with a value of $338.6 million in the first ten months of last financial year.

Leathergoods exports over the same period were worth $458.3 million, compared to $582.1 million in the corresponding period last year, a drop of 21.3%.
