Packer points at leather sector
22/05/2009
Two unnamed packer firms in the province of Corrientes in the north-east of Argentina are the only companies there to have received emergency funding to prevent lay-offs, local media have said.
In total, 20 companies in Corrientes claim they are entitled to the payment scheme, through which the government has agreed to make an emergency monthly payment of around US$160 per month to each worker to allow employers to keep their doors open, but local sources say the meat companies are the only ones to have received money so far.
After receiving the government's assistance for three months already this year, one of the packer firms is said to be on the point of being able to stand on its own feet again. Reports say that the other one needs help for two further months, owing to a downturn in its leather sector activities, which it says provide an important proportion of its income.
