US upholstery manufacturer Sam Moore Furniture is the latest company in the sector to complete a programme to improve the furniture industry’s environmental performance. Its sister company, which specialises in producing leather upholstery, is following in its footsteps.

The voluntary programme, called Enhancing Furniture’s Environmental Culture (EFEC), was put in place by the American Home Furnishings Alliance.

Part of Hooker Furniture, Sam Moore said in a statement that the work it had done on EFEC at its factory in Bedford, Virginia, had generated more than $250,000 in savings.

“I commend the Sam Moore employees for their leadership, as they are the first in the Hooker Furniture corporate family to reach this important environmental milestone,” said Alan Cole, president of Hooker’s upholstery division. He went on to say that the group’s leather upholstery company, Bradington-Young, was now working to complete the programme too.

EFEC helped Sam Moore reduce landfill waste by 800,000 kilos, saving more than $40,000 in  costs. It also cut its water consumption, reduced electrical energy use, and used less oil.

Other manufacturers with EFEC-registered facilities include American Drew, Bernhardt, C.R. Laine, Fairfield Chair, Hickory Chair, Kincaid, Lea Inds. and Vaughan-Bassett.
