No meat breakthrough for Lula
20/05/2009
Brazil’s president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has failed in an attempt to gain greater access to the Chinese meat market for his country’s packer companies.
Brazilian providers are particularly interested in making inroads into the Chinese pork market, which is by far the biggest in the world. In 2006, of 100 million tonnes of pork consumed worldwide, China’s share was 53%, but President Lula’s visit produced no breakthrough and media in Brazil have reported that discussions will continue in October.
As far as beef is concerned, China halted imports from Brazil in 2005 after an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the South American country. Last year, the Chinese authorities said beef imports from four Brazilan states could recommence.
