Morocco claims success

Morocco has claimed that measures it has taken in recent months to combat the global economic downturn have paid off. Abdelmalek Kettani, president of the CGEM employers’ federation has told a forum of African business leaders that his country’s success has been “remarkable” in the context of the global situation.

He said efforts had centred on helping companies in the sectors most affected by the global situation to stay in business and to stay active in export markets so that they can remain internationally competitive. The African country’s leather industry was one of the sectors to have benefitted in this way, he said, along with the textile and tourist industries.

He also highlighted training initiatives for workers, and improvements in working conditions, such as an obligatory health insurance for workers. He said the country had also made it a priority to improve remote communities’ access to water and energy.
