More jobs in India, ministry claims
18/05/2009
A government study to assess the employment situation in India has thrown up a surprising finding: jobs have picked up in the last two months.
The Ministry of Labour and Employment reported that 500,000 jobs had gone between October-December 2008. An additional 100,000 jobs were lost in January 2009. On May 18, however, the ministry said that employers across India created 250,000 new jobs in March.
The figure comes from a study the ministry carried out in mid-April, but it delayed reporting the findings until after the recent general election.
Specific to the leather industry, the study showed a rise of 2.76% in the sector’s combined workforce.
