China's leathergoods exports begin to grow again

China's first-quarter leathergoods exports had a value of $2.6 billion.
This represents a decline of 1% compared to the first quarter of 2008. However, the March figure taken in isolation shows growth of 11.7%. The value of leathergoods exports in March reached $980 million, double the growth registered in February.
Exports to Japan grew by 8.4% in the first quarter, while the growth in leathergoods exports to the EU in was 1.2%. Exports to the US, on the other hand, fell by 7.8%.
There was a huge jump in exports of Chinese leathergoods to ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries, with growth of 74.3% compared to the first quarter of 2008.
