India's industrial output shrank by 2.3% in March, the steepest decline in 16 years, the authorities announced on May 12, just as general elections in the world's largest democracy were coming to an end.

Leather output was down 18% for the month and 7% for the year so far.

Former finance minister Yashwant Sinha said: “The new government will have to take concrete steps to deal with the multi-dimensional crisis that the economy faces.”
