Hide prices and drought make life worse for livestock sector

A prominent figure in Paraguay’s livestock industry has called on the government to direct any assistance it gives to the sector towards small and medium-sized operators, and that it should take the form of affordable loans rather than subsidies.

Speaking to local media in the build-up to the national autumn cattle fair, Dr Carlos Trapani, president of the Paraguayan Cattle Fairs Association, said the sector had already been badly affected by a fall in demand for beef owing to the economic downturn. This has led to speculation that the government might attempt to bring some parts of the meat industry under state control.

Dr Trapani said that industry should stay free of state control, but that government assistance would be welcome as the sector was now suffering further because of the added effects of drought, a fall in the price of hides and even a drop in the price offal can fetch at abattoirs.
