Chemical company with a heart for art

To mark the first anniversary of the Sichuan earthquake, Chinese leather chemicals supplier Decision Chemical has taken part in an unusual art project.

The authorities in Sichuan have opened a museum, dedicated to the memory of the almost 70,000 people who lost their lives in the earthquake. Among the exhibits are paintings that local children did as part of an initiative to help them come to terms with what had happened.

Interest in these paintings has grown so much that local business figures decided to auction them and use the proceeds to boost recovery projects in the area.

Chinese-American James Jao, president of a company called JAO Design International became the first person to buy one of the  paintings, paying 100,000 RMB for it at a charity dinner in Beijing in October.

Then, at the beginning of May, Peng Xiancheng, general manager of Decision Chemical, which is based in Sichuan, bought another of the children’s works of art, and  also agreed to set up a micro-fund to provide medical help to survivors of the earthquake.
